About the area

Around 1874 Mennonites from Russia settled a town they called Gnadenfeld. It was 20 years before the first business, a creamery station, was established in the town. Soon after a doctor trying to open a hospital in the area established a post office so that shipments of medicine and supplies could be shipped into the town. THe doctor selected the name of of an heroic sea captain of a ship that sank in the English channel for the post office, effectively changing the name of the town to Goessel.
