About the area |
This city which was incorporated around 1880, was first the place where early pioneers on the Sante Fe Trail staked out land. The first building in town housed a drug store and office soon followed by the establishment of general merchandise stores, clothing stores, blacksmith shops, and suppliers of other goods. Around the time of its incorporation, the first newspaper in town was founded. The government was ahead of its time when a woman was elected mayor in 1890. The Stars and Stripes Military museum, although a small building, displys memorabilia from all military branches. The Canton Township Carnegie Library is another one of the librairies which benefited from the generosity of the Carnegie Foundation. |
