Standing watch over the McPherson County courthouse is the statue of General James Birdseye McPherson; the highest ranking Union officer to die on the battlefield during the Civil War. The restoration and preservation project on the McPherson Opera house has revealed the splendor of this 3 story structure circa 1888. The opera house was built in Romanesque Revival style and in its heyday held close to 900 seats. Nowdays the opera house has lots of entertainment scheduled from a variety of performers. There are performances by bands, movies and productions by the local community theater. Fast access to McPherson can be had via McPherson airport whose runway measures approximately 5500 feet in length can serve business and privately owned aircraft weighing 40,000 pounds or less. There is also a well maintained 75 foot wide grass runway which is about 2500 feet long.
