About the area

At its inception when it was founded around 1885, Plains was a ranching community. When the steam engine was invented it spelled the end of ranching and by the turn of the century land around Plains was slowly being plowed under and planted to crops. The gasoline engine entered the picture after World War I and the turnover to farmland was accelerated. The coming of the Rock Island railroad to Plains in the early 1900's began the start of a booming economy for the town. Agriculture is still the primary industry of the area.
