Around 1884 two women, a mother and daughter, from Chicago filed on claims where Scott City now stands. Several men from Chicago followed in the same year and helped the women build a cabin, which was shared with many other settlers during the following severe winter. One year later Scott City was founded by the Scott City Town Company which laid out the town. By the end of the next year the town had three weekly newspapers, four banks, a board of trade, two hotels and fifty other business establishments. Several exciting events are held throughout the year in Scott City. Every fall the Scott City Indoor arena is the site of the Sunflower Futurity and Derby. This event attracts close to 300 riders from Kansas and surrounding states and features Barrel races for horses 4-5 years old, seniors, juniors and pee-wees. The Wings and Wheels festival has a fly-in of vintage planes and modern planes and a car show with classic cars, motorcycles, trucks and other vehicles.
