| About the area |
The town was established in the 1600s and the main industry was whaling. Located on the coast men would go out for weeks at a time to kill a whale. The blubber of the whale was used for oil and some meat was sold. And what do you know, there is a Whaling City Golf Course here too. Today New Bedford is an industrial center with companies like Titleist golfing supplies. Many famous people came from New Bedford also. The abolitionist Frederick Douglass came from the South and settled in the town. Great area to visit maritime museums. U-Mass Dartmouth nearby. Nice little inlets and coves as well.
