Elizabeth Pole incorporated the town in the 1600\'s. The area was known for its silversmithing and industry began to boom. The town was the site of many battles before and around the Revolutionary war. This caused to have to reconsruct the towns buildings and re-establish itself in the late 1800\'s. Taunton is known for its political debates and how people have had to compromise. The town also has two nicknames such as \"Silver City\" as it is known for its silversmithing and \"Christmas City\" because during Christmas many events are organized here. People from the all over the area attend the Christmas events.
