Northhampton is home to the famous Smith College, which was established in 1871 by Sophia Smith and is known for its liberal arts programs. The college has had ten presidents over the years and is part of something called the Five college consortium. In this consortium students can take courses at other colleges and vice versa. The college has wonderful botanical garden, Japanese tea house and traditional rock garden. Smith offers many programs such as a degree in social work with an emphasis on direct service work. Undergraduates receive a wonderful education. Northampton is nestled up against the mighty Connecticut River, and has a lot of lovely countryside around it.
