About the area
Madawaska lies along the St. John river and the border with Canada. Acadians landed here in the 1780’s after fleeing from their Nova Scotia homeland where they were in danger of being deported by the British. The history and the culture of these people can be experienced by a visit to the Tante Blanche museum or by attendance at the Acadian Festival in Late June. The main part of th museum site is the log-house museum which houses various artifacts. On the site is also the Madawaska School District No. 1, the interior of which is furnished with collected artifacts, textbooks, and the basic teaching aids of the period of its occupancy; and the Albert House which is typical of the farming community that existed at that time and is constructed of squared dove-tail logs. The Acadian festival has as a main feature the honoring of a founding family in the guise of a family reunion. Added to this are the performances by several Acadian bands as well as other musical groups and an occasional animal act.
