SR 4, SR 27 and SR 43 run through Farmington. US 2 is located near the city to the South. Other major roads in Franklin county are SR’s 4, 16, 17, 133, 142, 145, 146 and 156.
About the area
In the latter part of the 18th century settlers came to the area and a a sawmill was established. Water power in the area attracted industry, such as lumber mills, brickyards, a foundry, a cheese factory and two mowing machine factories, a spool factory and a tannery. In the 1870's the narrow gauge Sandy River Railroad established a terminus in the city; opening up the Rangeley Lake and Sugarloaf Mountain areas. The university of Maine Farmington is a Liberal Arts college which offers the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Education degrees. The courses of study available are in the Arts, Business & Administration, Computer Science & Math, Education, English & Humanities, Health & Human Services and Pre-Med. The city fairgrounds is site each September of the Farmington fair and each June of the Maine Antique Tractor Club festival. ,
