About the area |
Dover-Foxcroft is located on the Piscataquis River and was formed in the 1920âs by the merger of Dover, on the south side of the river, and Foxcroft, on the north side. With the Piscataquis river as a source of water power; the 1850âs saw the opening of sawmills, shingle and clapboard manufacturers, a gristmill, tanneries, carriage makers, and a woolen factory. As time passed a shingle mill, a carriage builder, a chair manufacturer, a tannery, a fork maker, pail makers, a machinist, and a sash, door and blind factory were added providing the industrial base which led to the merger of the two towns. However, the population has remained steady at about 2500. |
