| About the area |
In the Fairmont area where the Winnebago Indians once live and hunted; two settlers established Fort Tchan Hassan near the headwaters of the Des Moines River. About 20 years later, in the 1850's two more settlers bult there homes on two large lakes in the area; leading to the ploting of a city by the the Des Moines and Watonwan Land Company. The future of the city was in jeopardy during the Dakota (Sioux) Indian uprising. Today Fairmont is a thriving city of about 11,000 people with a stable economic base. With 4 large lakes (Sisseton, Budd, Hall and Amber) located in a string through the Western part of the city and Buffalo lake to the North; residents and people throughout the region have many areas available for swimming, pleasure boating, water skiing, canoeing, fishing, hiking and wildlife observation. |
