About the area |
The first settlers to the area were Englishmen from Exeter, England who before 1850 put down roots a few miles West of where the city now sits. The first layout of the city was not accomplished until around 1880 and added to in the few short years afterward. First incorporated as a village; incorporation as a city took place around 1964. Around 1896 rail was laid from Exeter to Cassville and the Cassville and Western Railroad was born. When there was a decline in revenue and operating costs increased; the family of the men who had purchased the small railroad gave up running it in early 1949. A second owner kept the railroad going on an informal schedule until finances again declined and all attempts were abandoned around 1956. |
