About the area |
In the Summer of 1881, Washburn was sufficiently established for burglars to break into the dry goods store, blow the safe and make off with a sum of money and then break into the Mooney's store, where the post office was located and make off with a large number of stamps. About nine years later a mill was established in town. The town had inhabitants as far back as 1840; but was called Keetsville which was destroyed during the Civil War. From 1867 to 1869 the town was rebuilt and renamed Washburn. It had a depot of the Frisco railroad which is still standing today although unused and the W. B. Adcock's building, in front of which the first electric pole was installed, is now the community center. |
