About the area
Around 1871 a landowner in the area of present day Polo sold an acre of land to a retailer who built the first store and the town was started. The city was built as a station for the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad; however as the railroad changed their routing several times, the city went through multiple plots. The people of Polo however were happy to welcome this railroad, since unlike other railroads, asking for financing, this one received financing from the federal government and asked for nothing from the city of Polo. StageCoach Park, located on the South end of Polo, consists of the Zack Wheat Memorial Sports complex and the Circle T Jeff Templeton Memorial arena. Zachariah Davis "Zack" Wheat, a local resident whose farm included the park grounds, was a Major League Baseball left fielder for Brooklyn in the National League who was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Polo Lone Riders Saddle club periodically stages horse shows at the arena.
