If you drive in Billings, you will probably find yourself on US 60 or SR 413 which run together and meet SR 14.
About the area
Although the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the present site of Billings around 1806; the city was not founded until the Northern Pacific Railroad built a railhead there around 1882 and named the city for its president. European settlers did come through the area before this but resistance from Native Americans chased them. Incorporation occurred around 1885 and the establishment of ranches and the arrival of homesteaders, taking advantage of free land, caused the town to grow. At first sugar beet farming and the establishment of a sugar refinery were significant additions to the economy. However, the development of natural resources such as minerals, coal, natural gas and oil during the 1900's led to steady growth of the city.
