About the area
Highlandville owes its founding to an unlikely couple; a German immigrant who traveled to America in search of a better life and a widow fleeing from Mexico, who married and built a log cabin at a spot that was about a days wagon ride south of Springfield. Around 1868, this couple built a trading post which catered to the needs of travelers migrating South and trappers and cotton farmers from Arkansas bringing goods North to Springfield. The couple chose the name for this settlement. There were still settlers coming to the area in the early 1900's and stores were added to the town. However the city was not incorporated until around 1993. Although there is little entertainment in this city, branson and Springfield are nearby. The approximately 2,500 acre area owned by the Missouri Department of Conservation, Busiek State Forest and Wildlife area, is located a few miles to the South. This area has a well-marked trail system for hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders. There a shooting range on the area and primitive camping is allowed at designated sites by permit only.
