About the area
When news came of the impending construction of the Pacific railroad, Cuba was founded in anticipation of the railroad coming to it. No one is quite sure how the town got its name. Prior to the railroad coming, many early settlers worked in the iron ore mining industry and oxen carts were the only means of transporting agricultural and mining products to St. Louis. When the Southern branch of the Pacific railroad reached Cuba between 1859-1860 it developed into a shipping center for agriculture and industry. Around 1900 Cuba was producing and distributing more apples than any other community in Missouri. With the model T and paving of Route 66, the city established restaurants, gasoline stations and motels to meet the needs of the new automobile traffic. The Viva Cuba’s Mural project resulted in the painting of 12 murals, depicting different themes of the city's history, Bette Davis and Amelia Earhart, on public buildings; beautifying the Route 66 corridor. An 1873 replica of a train of the Cuba-Salem branch of the Pacific railroad was sculpted by a father and son team and placed on a decorative brick wall in the Viva Cuba Garden that sits at the Route 66/Highway 19 intersection.
