About the area

With the selection of the spot for Dade county's first court and the donation of approximately 50 acres by a landowning couple around 1851, Greenfield was born. The wooded hills, fertile valleys and large amounts of water drew settlers from Kentucky, Tennessee and the Carolinas to the area. The square is still lined with brick buildings built in the 1880's using bricks made in the Greenfield Brickyard. The Opera House located on the square is still in use for the summer season of the Dade County Community Theatre productions.
