About the area |
At the time of its founding in the 1830's, New Have was a riverboat stop on the Missouri River called "Miller's Landing." and its founder owned a wood yard on the river which provided fuel for the steamboat trade. With the arrival of the Union Pacific railroad in the 1850s, commerce and activity in the area increased and the town fathers changed the name of the town to New Haven. The John Colter Memorial and Visitors center includes a log shelter with interpretive signs and a monument dedicated to the honor of John Colter who joined Lewis and Clark on their expedition. There are also interpretive signs along the river walk related to the Lewis and Clark Expedition and local history. In the museum there are art exhibits featuring John Colter and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Native American artifacts and items related to Missouri River history. In 1856, reflecting the growth of the town from its origins as a steamboat stop. |
