| About the area |
The first settler and his wife came to the area around 1800 from South Carolina. About 39 years later another settler to the region purchased a large parcel of land in the area from the U.S. Government. Some years later that first settler family purchased a portion of this land which became the site of the original town. He later donated the ground for the railroad right-of-way and built the depot which the railroad named “Sullivan”. Meramec State Park, located on the Meramec river, has bluffs, caves and trails and offers visitors the opportunity to swim, raft or boat on the river. The park also has a large aquarium with examples of aquatic life found at the park..
