About the area |
Around 1840 as people traveled the St. Louis to Springfield trail and ox carts traveled a path to transport iron ore from Meramec Iron works near St James to riverboat docks at Hermann; these two roads met at a spot where a general store, blacksmith shop and a few other buildings began to serve their needs. This was the beginning of Owensville, so named as a result of a horseshoe pitching contest between two blacksmiths. A Post Office soon followed and agricultural products and clay were among the first industries in the area aide by a railroad that soon entered the area. The Gasconade County fair is held in this city each July with events such as a Demolition derby and Tractor Pull and punctuated by live musical entertainment provided by several different groups. |
