| About the area |
The first settler to Ash Grove not only settled here around 1853 but also opened the first store and built the first home in town. This was soon followed by the establishment of a blacksmith shop and an additional store. These enterprises were all that existed here until after the Civil War. Eventually the Ash Grove Portland Cement and White Lime company was established here. The Nathan Boone Homestead was the home of the youngest son of Daniel Boone. In addition to his career in surveying, during which he laid out some of Missouri's first roadways he was a captain of the Missouri Rangers during the War of 1812. The home was at first a double pen log cabin with an open dogtrot through the center which was later closed in to complete the house with a walnut weatherboarding exterior. Many repairs and improvements were made to update and modernize it with the result that is was a lived in residence until the 1960's.
