About the area |
Prior to the Civil War the center of the city was located slightly to the Northwest of where it presently sits. That however changed when the railroad came through shortly after the war. The city filed for incorporation around the Summer of 1867. Although the city retains its old charm it is a bustling place with a little over 5,000 residents. Greenwood has Joel Dean Hitt park, Freedom park, Meadow Lakes park, Maple park and Sunset park for the enjoyment of its residents. The city sits right at the edge of the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife area. This conservation area is open to hiking and hunting. Doves, Deer, Waterfowl, Rabbit and Squirrel are some of the game available for hunters in this area. Trout stocking at Coot Lake, Plover Lake and Honker pond take place making these bodies of water in the area great for fishing. |
