About the area
Carterville is located on land originally owned by a farmer who inherited from his father who settled here around 1841 and for whom the town is named. It originally was a mining camp but then on more commercial importance and began to grow as a result. The layout of the town was recorded around 1875 and two years later the first incorporation of the town took place followed by incorporation as a city approximately 5 years later. At the time Carterville had dry goods and clothing stores, boot and shoe stores, drug stores, grocery stores, a hardware store, a barber shop, machine shop, saloons, blacksmiths; livery stables, lunch-rooms, boarding houses, hotels, a real estate office, attorneys, doctors, a newspaper, churches, schools, and depots in or near the city limits for three railroads. The annual Carterville Route 66 Fall festival is held the first week in October. It starts with a parade and ends with a street dance. In between there is a hula hoop contest, gunny sack race, pumpkin decorating a car show, entertainment, craft booths and food.
