About the area |
Although the first settler built a log cabin in the area around 1803, it was not until about forty years later that the city got its start. At that time a mineralogist and geologist for an Eastern company found silica (sand rock) near the mouth of Plattin Creek, which was of the quality required for glass manufacturing. A Detroit businessman then established the American Plate Glass company here. To find a place for the workers needed by the factory; brush was cleared and homes were built. The town was first called New Detroit but in time with the growth of the city its residents decided to change the name to Crystal city. The company was eventually acquired by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass company which halted operations here around 1991. Bill Bradley, star college and professional basketball and later US Senator was born in this city. The city has a municipal park and swimming pool. |
