About the area
About the time that the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory, an early settler built a log cabin in the area of DeSoto. Around 1859 the St. Louis Iron Mountain Railroad, which was to become the Missouri Pacific Railroad, built a depot here along with a major rail car repair facility. With the many artesian wells located here the city is sometimes known as "Fountain City". However the city takes seriously its railroad past and the role they played in its history. The Railroad Memorial is dedicated to the men and women who, since 1857, worked for the St. Louis Iron Mountain, Missouri Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads in DeSoto. It consists of three, engraved black granite slabs which are fronted by red bricks and granite blocks, embedded in the floor, which are engraved with the names of the workers and sponsors.
