About the area
This city with a strange name lies along the Mississippi river. Towards the end of the 18th century, a settler from Connecticut was given a Spanish land grant of one square league. He was aware of the of the richness of the area’s rich mineral deposits and brought in equipment and workmen from Virginia, Austin to mine and smelt lead. Together with another settler, he laid out a town at the mouth of Joachim Creek to serve as a shipping point for the lead smelted at the mines. The settler named the town Herculaneum since he thought the eroded limestone strata at the mines looked like seats in the amphitheater of the ancient Roman city buried by Mt. Vesuvius. There were not many homes in town at this time and for a while it suffered a decline when the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway bypassed it in the 1850's. However in the 1880's the city experienced a revival when it was chosen as as a lead smelting site by the St. Joseph Lead Company and the Mississippi River and Bonne Terre Railroad ran track into town. The city has several public parks with ballfields and historical sites.
