About the area |
The first settlers came to the Hillsboro area, drawn by the abundance of game, timber, and rich soil for farming and the plentiful supply of water from the Big Spring. This spring still flows and can be viewed by the public. With the donation of a tract of land by two of the landowners, Hillsboro became the county seat around 1839 to be followed by incorporation some thirty four years later. Travelers first came to the city on foot, on horseback, farm wagon, or buckboard until the stagecoach made its appearance in the late 1830's and the railroad came to nearby Victoria in the late 1850's. In July the Jefferson County Fair comes to Hillsboro and in August the Demolition Derby both held at the fairgrounds. The fair features the arena events, main stage entertainment, the carnival, 4H exhibits, a family pavilion, an entertainment pavilion and a whole lot of vendors. |
