About the area |
There are two statues and a group of statues in town which are of interest and reflect the history of the town and its sentiments. The statue of Blind Boone sits in Blind Boone Park originally a segregated park for the African-American community. John William Boone was an African-American concert pianist and composer who grew up in Warrensburg and was a beloved member of the community. He brought
Ragtime music to the concert stage and he was a classical pianist & composer. The statue and monument of Old Drum, is of a hound dog, who was shot dead around 1869 by a rancher who thought Old Drum was killing his sheep. Old Drum's owner brought suit and during the trial, the owner's attorney stated "The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world...is his dog." THese words are engraved on the monument to Old Drum which stands in front of the courthouse and are believed to have led to the expression "man's best friend". There are several statues of children at play in Nancy Anderson Memorial park to memorialize those who died in their youth. They depict children on swings, children climbing a tree and children on a log with their dog.
