About the area
What was originally a Wyota Indian village became Lebanon around 1849 with the donation of property by two land owning families in the area. The town was known as Wyota but around 1850 the name was changed and after the Civil War, businesses and the economy of the town recovered and started to improve. The Frisco railroad arrived around 1868 and when the city's government refused to grant land to it, the railroad built its depot about a mile away from the main part of town. As a result businesses started moving alongside the rails, south of old Town and the community permanently changed. The Gasconade Hotel was built to accommodate the visitors who came to bathe in and drink from the magnetic waters discovered in a well around 1889. Unfortunately the hotel was destroyed by fire ten years after its establishment. The Old Jail which was built around 1876 and may be the oldest remaining building in town, is now a museum and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum exhibits consist of antiques donated to the Laclede County Historical Society. The town now has a civic center, the Kenneth E. Cowan Civic enter with an exhibit Hall, meeting rooms, YMCA and a theater and the Boswell aquatic center as well as eight parks and the famous Lebanon I-44 Speedway scene of many NASCAR short-track races. ,
