About the area
Lexington once was a trade center which served as an outfitting post for the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails. The riverfront was lined with factories, warehouses, mills and stores. The presence of many steamboats was a common sight along the docks which could accommodate them all. Today many of the shops are located in buildings which date back to the 1840's. Wentworth Military academy was established several years before the 20th century dawned. A military history museum and Vietnam War Memorial are located on the campus of this school. The scenic street comprising the Highland Avenue Historic district runs along the bluff above the Missouri River and was once part of the Santa Fe Trail. The homes in this district were built in the mid to late 1800's and there is a Missouri river overlook here. The Lexington Historical museum, located in what was the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, circa 1846, has exhibits displaying items representative of the steamboat era, the Pony Express, Civil War, coal mining and early Lexington history.
