To honor George Washington's residence this city took its name in a county whose first settler arrived about 30 years before the Civil War and set up his homestead a short distance South of the city. At the beginning of the 1890's, the arrival of the Greenfield and Northern Railroad was built enhancing the business climate of the city. The annual Apple Butter Makin' Days festival held in mid October features apple butter, what else! This delicacy is cooked in huge copper kettles over open fires, a craft demonstrated on the Southeast corner of the courthouse lawn. Several contests are held during this event for such activities as nail driving, a terrapin race, the pet parade, Bubble Gum blowing, apple pie eating, apple biting and fiddle playing. Nearby Talbot's Wildlife reserve has horse trails, walking trails and several ponds for fishing as well as deer and turkey habitat for the hunting season.
