About the area |
It was in the Summer of 1901 when a dark blot on the history of the town occurred. Bands of white residents stole weapons from a state militia arsenal and in a raw display of violence banished the townâs 300 black residents and lynched three black men. June 5 of each year is designated as a day of remembrance for the banishment. The old Pierce City Christian Church now houses the Harold Bell Wright/Pierce City museum which has on display the Harold Bell Wright memoriabilia and items related to
Pierce City's Ragtime composer Theron Bennett and artist Grace Tinker. Wright was pastor of the church. Also on display is an exhibit related to the banishment.
