Linneus was first settled around 1834. Ten years after this there were only approximately 100 residents in the town. The city was originally known as Linnville but in the 1840's the name was changed to Linneus, not much of a change. The at one time even had an opera house with a stage and theater seating for traveling drama shows and local performances. This is now a small city but it does have a community building with meeting halls and a gymnasium and a city park.
