About the area
Although the town of Macon was not settled until around 1852; pioneers came to the area from Kentucky and Virginia, many in search of honey along the Bee Trace trail, at least 13 years earlier. Four years later the town was laid out and plots established. The city became known as "The City of Maples" because of a gift to the city of 10,000 young maple trees by a real estate man in lieu of back taxes he owed. There are several city parks, a municipal swimming pool and tennis courts in Macon. There is a community theater group which performs at the Maples Repertory theater. The Annual Maples Rep Winter Ball is held at the end of January at the Elk's Lodge. You can come and enjoy a night of Big Band music and desserts.
