About the area
Monroe City was laid out around 1857 where Marion, Monroe and Ralls counties meet. Soon after a public barbecue was the site of the public sales of lots took place and the construction of houses and businesses was started in what was first known as Monroe Station; a stop on the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad. Around 1871 the Hannibal and Central Missouri Railroads were completed between Hannibal and Monroe, enabling farmers and merchants to acquire and ship products to all parts of the county. In the late 1890's the Henderson Produce Company was formed greatly enhancing the economy of the city. The city's 11 parks offer modern playground equipment, covered picnic pavilions and basketball courts. The city also maintains fishing spots and picnic tables at South Lake which is just south of the city.
