About the area |
New Madrid was founded around 1789 by a Princeton graduate and Indian trader, on the site of a trading settlement, L'Anse a la Graise. He named it after Madrid in Spain since he was promised 15 million acres by the Spanish ambassador. Although Spain gave land to colonists it did not come though with the grant and this early settler, who was the first American immigrant to the area, left. Cotton and soybean crops predominate in this largely farming community. Those who frequented the Kendall saloon, located on the Mississippi River, in its hayday would never have imagined that it one day would house the New Madrid Historical museum. The museum exhibits Native American artifacts and displays reflecting the pre-Columbian culture of the area; Civil War artifacts such as letters, clothing, equipment and weaponry and furniture, clothing, tools and utensils representative of late 19th and early 20th century life in the area.
