US 60 meets SR E in Granby.
About the area
Although lead had been discovered in the Granby area 13 years earlier it was not until around 1853 that mining started of what turned out to be a very rich deposit. The effort was so successful that Granby became the mining capital of Newton county. In addition the large amounts of lead found attracted many miners to the area. Tons of waste from the lead mines were found after the Civil War to be zinc, leading to another jump in mining in the area and the shipment of close to 100 million pounds of the ore from the area as 1880 approached. The Granby Miners museum has approximately 4,000 artifacts of early day mining as well as paintings by local artists of mining subjects, mining equipment, rocks and minerals. On the South wall of the museum there is a huge mural depicting several operation and structures of mining. Every year the town celebrates Old Mining Town Days with a three day, Fourth of July picnic and lots of other activities and live musical entertainment.
