About the area
The Greer Spring and Trail are on property purchased by the original owner around 1859 who had a mill operating at the site one year later. Although the mill was burned by Confederate soldiers, the mill was rebuilt around 1870. After milling ceased around 1920 the property was purchased and used as a family retreat by a second family and after efforts were made to establish a water bottling plant, the property was purchased by the U.S. Forest Service. The Spring can only be accessed by hiking close to a mile on a trail from a trailhead sign on Missouri Hwy 19. The municipal pool is located in Alton City park. Several miles South of Alton you will find Edward “Ted” and Pat Jones- Confluence Point State park where the Missouri and the Mississippi merge and where the Lewis and Clark Expedition set off on their journey up the Missouri. In the parks wetlands you are apt to see bald eagles and raptors.
