A school was established, the Pleasant Hope Academy, in this city around 1849 before any business had been established. The school did cease to exist six years later, but around 1851 the first general store was opened. The city continued to thrive and by around 1889 it had an implement and grocery store, a drug store, blacksmith shops, a wood shop, a flour mill and a wagon-maker's shop. Even another school, the Pleasant Hope Normal Academy, was established. The Pleasant Hope Conservation area located just to the South of the city is a heavily forested area. There are some ponds in the area and it is home to a number wildlife species, including deer, turkey, squirrel and raccoon. Also located in the area are a two-station, unmanned shooting range and a trap shooting range.
