The town began life as Claysville and its first settlers came from Kentucky around 1817. It then took on a new name before 1838 was over, Brownsville. When a minister passing through found that his ailing wife's health improved significantly to where she recovered her health after drinking from a local spring. After he purchased the land where the spring was located; the water became famous and visitors started coming from all over. So roundabout 1887, the town changed its name to coincide with name of the springs. It's a nice to place to live with a diversity of age groups and accessibility to major highways and rail service. The Sweet Springs City Park, known as Gusher Park, is a public park on historic Sweet Springs ground. The major facility in the park is the public swimming pool. There is also a a public tennis court, a public golf course and a country club in this city.
