US 136 runs through Lancaster, SR 202 runs through Glenwood, US 63 runs along the Eastern edge of Greentop and US 63 runs along the Eastern edge of Queen City. Hearings for city ordinance and traffic violations occurring in the cities of Glenwood, Greentop (portion in Schuyler county) and Queen city are held in Lancaster Municipal Court. |

About the area |
Settlers came to the Lancaster area prior to 1840 and several years later the only judges in the area declared it the county seat because of its central location in the county. Around 1894 this selection came into dispute, but the petition to change it was defeated. By 1859 a school had been established in Lancaster by authorization of the state legislature and opened with an enrollment of approximately 100. However when the Civil War started, the students enlisted in the Confederate army and the school was forced to close. The arrival of the railroad and the production of a cash crop in Tobacco gave a boost to the economy although after 1907 the tobacco industry gradually declined and disappeared. The Schuyler County Historical Society celebrates the history of the county at it's annual potluck and ice cream social at the Schuyler County Museum in Lancaster. |
