About the area
A natural ford on the site of present-day Bismarck was known to the Plains Indian tribes long before there was any settlement here. In the 1820s and 1830s, an outpost of the American Fur Company was established near Bismarck. Around 1837, a small settlement was established at present-day Bismarck called Crossing on the Missouri, and it benefited from its role as a port for steamboats carrying military troops and supplies to forts and Indian agencies in the Missouri River basin. Between 1871 and 1872 squatters settled in the city expecting the Northern Pacific Railway tracks to reach the area and around 1873, the railroad did reach the crossing. The city's name was then changed to Bismarck in honor of the first chancellor of the German Empire in the hope that this would bring German investment in the railroad.
