About the area |
Even late in the 19th century, University City consisted mainly of farms and small farming communities. Soon after the start of the 20th century, new homes were constructed in the area and the Delmar Race track and the Delmar Garden Amusement park were popular attractions. About this time the publisher of the Womansâ Magazine and the Womanâs Farm Journal purchased land to the Northwest of the 1904 St. Louis Worldâs Fair Forest Park construction site. In addition to relocating his headquarters to this land; he established and laid out a subdivision as a high-class residential district. The subdivision was laid out to accommodate varying lot sizes, a mix of architectural style and different sizes as well as price of houses. The Magazine Building which is now City Hall stood over 130 feet tall and dominated the view of the area. The city of University City was incorporated around 1906 and so named because of the proximity to Washington University, although this institution lies outside of the Southeast border of the city. |
