About the area |
The city lies along Lake Taneycoma and Rockaway Beach public park offers easy access to the lake with its lakefront beach. The park also has a causeway and fishing pier. Rockaway Beach was founded around 1917 as a resort community. The town is located between Tablerock and Powersite dams; the construction of which cooled the waters, sharply reducing the attraction of the beach. However, the refurbishing of the beach has brought back many visitors. The annual Rods and Relics Car show in late September not only has classic and old cars but also features live band music and dancing. The annual Rockaway Beach Rendezvous and Black Powder shoot in May is an interesting event. Folks dress up as primitive campers and traders in 1840's period dress. They narrate tales and stories and there is music of the era. Craftsmen produce original items which can be purchased. |
