About the area
Nevada got its start around 1855 when a special commission selected the site as the county seat and approximately 50 acres were purchased for a nominal sum. Around 1863 the Kansas Jayhawkers and Cedar County militia preyed upon the city resulting in murders, arsons and robberies. To rid the city of the problem; the St Clair and Cedar County militia soldiers were ordered to burn the town and kill all the bushwhackers after evacuating the residents and their household goods. The result was the destruction of a major portion of the structures including the courthouse, stores and the best houses. Around 1868, the city began rebuilding, erecting businesses and homes and approximately one year later the city was incorporated. The city maintains 11 parks and a skate park for the pleasure of its residents. Together these parks offer shelter houses, picnic tables, barbeque grills, a lighted softball field, a Little League Football field, horseshoe pits, a walking trail, a natural area with wetlands, lakes, a paved boat ramp, a merry-go-round, an amphitheater with seating, a caboose and gazebos.
