The venues located in what is considered the Natchez Historical park by the National Park Service capture the essence of the old South and are wonderful places to visit. These are different parts related to the old life. There is the the magnificent antebellum estate of John McMurran which is known as Melrose and is open to the public. Also in this park is the downtown home of African-American barber and diarist William Johnson who became a very successful barber and entrepreneur in the city of Natchez. The French Fort Rosalie was the first white settlement in the Natchez area established as a trading post by the French, in the early 1700's. Unfortunately, the Natchez Indians surprised the garrison with a brutal attack in retaliation for years of mistreatment by the Commandant of the fort . |
