The earliest settlers to the area came to a place called Australia Landing on the Mississippi River in the 1850s. When the railroad from Memphis to New Orleans was completed in the 1880's; the grandson of an early settler
built his home near the railroad. Soon others followed and the formation of the small community took place. The establishment of the post office followed and the town Incorporated as a village in February 1890; its designation as a town came shortly thereafter. Without much employment in town; Most residents commute to work Clarksdale to the North and Shelby and Cleveland to the South. Many of them are employed at the casinos in Coahoma and Tunica counties. |
