About the area |
After the Civil War, a brother of Jefferson Davis sold his property, then called Davis Bend, to a former slave who had been a prominent leader in the community; essentially turning the area into an autonomous free community. The slave's son along with another enterprising young man led the founding of Mound Bayou in the late 1880's Although the town suffered a severe economic decline in the 1920s and 1930s due to falling cotton prices; it rebounded with the opening of the Taborian Hospital in the early 1940's which provided low-cost health care to thousands in the area. The chief surgeon of the hospital, after accumulating much wealth contributed a small zoo and swimming pool to the community. |
